THE ABSOLUTE WORST FEELING

Postby ScrollMasterRob on Sun Jul 18, 2010 4:45 pm

My mother had a massive stroke Thursday. For the last two days I have watched her slip away and become more unresponsive. The doctors tell me that there is a fifty-fifty chance that my mom might survive, if you can call being half-paralyzed, brain-damaged, and unable to speak "living". I'll try to keep you posted.

Thank you for your prayers. They might have actrually done some good. My mom was alert, responsive, able to recognize people and obey commands. She ate solid food (pudding) and as able to swallow water. She isn't out of the woods yet, but at least she is out of the deep woods. I am awating the results of the next cat scan, and it will take months for the blood to drain from her brain, but she should become more responsive as the blood drains. The doctor gave a prognosis of a possible 60% recovery of the use of her right side, and, depending on the level of damage, about the same rate of recovery for her speech.

My brother, step-father and I visit every morning, from about 9:00 to 4:00, and we were about to give up hope until, about 12:30, she woke up, reached out with her left hand(the working one), and grabbed my right hand. The nurse/physical therapist came in (since mom was alert) and tested her reflexes. The left side is fine, she has some feeling in her right leg and foot (a GOOD sign) and not much feeling in her right arm. When asked if she could squeeze her right hand, she reached over with her left hand and squeezed her right hand. If you wonder where I get my sense of humor from, there it is.

The news gets better. My mom can speak, although there is difficulty understanding her. She can count, sing (the portion of the brain that covers music is not as damaged as speech), and is going to start intensive physical therapy tomorrow. She is able to feed herself with her left hand. There still isn't much reaction in the right side of her body, but considering it has not quite been a week since the stroke, I am seeing more recovery than I thought. I came up here expecting the worst. Thank GOD.

Mom was accepted into acute rehab at the hospital. The swelling in her brain tends to make her sleepy, but the doctors will be starting her on something that will help keep her awake. Her speech and recognition are improving, especially when she is more alert.

You have to be on top of the hospital staff. My mom did not have a bowel movement for 5 days, and the doctors had not done anything about that problem until I pointed it out. Mom as almost writhing in agony-she was almost impacted. If you ever have family in the hospital, keep on top of the staff.
